Juve back in serie A and aiming high

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is putting no limits to Juventus' ambitions ahead of the Turin giant's return to Serie A in the upcoming season.

"There are teams that are stronger favourites than us, but I think we could do better than anyone imagines," the 29-year-old keeper, widely considered the world's best, said on Thursday.

Buffon admitted that a top-four finish, which would guarantee a place in the 2008-09 Champions League, would be a good result for a team that has just come up from Serie B.

But he implied that even that might be aiming too low and predicted that Juve will give everyone a hard time, including Serie A title-holders Inter Milan and European champions AC Milan.

He said his optimism is fuelled by the club's closed-season buys. "We have done excellent business on the transfer market," he said.

"We are the team that has been most active, although that was natural as we have come up from Serie B. We have bought some excellent internationals and a pair of really promising youngsters".

Juve have drafted in Portugal midfielder Tiago from French champs Lyon and Argentine midfielder Sergio Almiron from Empoli.

Things are looking good up front too, thanks to the arrival of Vincenzo Iaquinta, a member of Italy's World Cup-winning squad, from Udinese.

Iaquinta will join an attack that already features captain Alessandro Del Piero and France forward David Trezeguet, who has signed a four-year extension.

Juve have strengthened their defence by signing Czech international Zdenek Grygera from Ajax, Portugal captain Jorge Andrade from Deportivo La Coruna and Italy Under-21 player Domenico Criscito from Genoa.

But the best business Juve have done this summer was to extend Buffon's contract until 2012.

"It's a squad with soul, in which everyone is indispensable," added the keeper.

"This was what influenced my decision (to extend my contract) and I'm really happy to have done so".

Buffon confirmed rumours on Thursday that his Czech model girlfriend Alena Seredova is pregnant.

Juventus won promotion back to the top flight in May after being relegated last year because of the Calciopoli referee-rigging scandal.

The Turin giants were also stripped of the 2005 and 2006 league titles because of the former management's involvement in the affair.
