Two Italian nuns kidnapped from a Kenyan border village by a suspected Somali gang have been identified as Caterina Giraudo and Maria Teresa Oliviero from a northern Italian missionary order.

The two women, aged 67 and 61, were snatched from their residence at 1 AM on Monday, the Kenyan Red Cross said.

Armed bandits also took three vehicles during their attack on the village of El Wak, which is situated near Kenya's northeastern border with Somalia.

The nuns, who belonged to the Padre de Foucauld Missionary Contemplative Movement in Cuneo, Piemonte, had lived in Kenya for many years and worked with Somali refugees, according to missionary news agency Misna.
