AC Milan and Fiorentina will face off in their last match of the season on Sunday and the outcome will determine which team will automatically qualify for the Champions League.
The team that does not qualify will have to take part in a preliminary qualification tournament.
AC Milan had a solid hold on second place before Sunday's humiliating 2-3 home defeat match against AS Roma which put Juventus in second.
It now holds third place with three points on Fiorentina, but should Milan lose in Florence with more than two goals against it, then Fiorentina will end the season in third place.
Sunday will also determine which team will join Reggina and Lecce in Serie B next season: Torino or Bologna.
Torino faces the toughest task because it must face AS Roma away without seven of its players, who were disqualified for brawling after the team's 2-3 defeat at home with Genoa.
Bologna, on the other hand, will host Catania which has already avoided relegation, although it lost its coach, Walter Zenga, who pundits see going to Rome next season to take the Lazio bench.
The end of the season on Sunday may also give some indication on the future of a number of coaches.
Juventus has already sacked Claudio Ranieri, with former defender Ciro Ferrara now subbing on the bench, and appears to be ready to ask former player Antonio Conte to coach next season.
Conte this year successfully brought Bari into Serie A.
There is also the possibility that Juve may try to get Luciano Spalletti from AS Roma, although his price tag appears to be out of reach for the Turin club which still must pay Ranieri's hefty salary.
Carlo Ancelotti is expected to say goodbye to the AC Milan with London and the Chelsea bench apparently on the horizon.
Former Brazil national Leonardo is considered by many to be in pole position for Ancelotti's job.
