Madonna seen in house windows

The face of the Madonna appears in an Italian house window when the sun's rays catch it at sunset, Italian villagers claim.

"It's really incredible!" said Angela, a middle-aged woman who lives near the house in Supino, a village south of Rome.

"There's too much wickedness and disease about and the Madonna wants to send signs to those who have forgotten her".

Supino Mayor Alessandro Foglietta, a Euro-MP with the rightwing National Alliance party, said: "I am very religious and I tend to think it is a sign from God".

"It is important to give due prominence to such an extraordinary event," said Foglietta, adding he would rush straight to see the window when he returns from Brussels on Thursday.

Parish priest Father Antonio Boni said, on the other hand: "I don't know anything about it apart from some gossip in the town. I'm very sceptical about such events and I haven't gone to the house just to gawk".

People from outside the town are already flocking to see the supposedly miraculous event.

It is the second time in 20 years that the village has been in the news for such apparitions.

The face of Christ was seen in a window in the mid 1980s, spurring a massive influx of believers.

Glass from the window was analysed and proved to be nothing out of the ordinary.

Supino gradually fell off the itinerary of pilgrims to sites where such apparitions have been reported.

Cases of religious figures 'appearing' in shadows, distempered walls and dried-up puddles have been widely reported in recent years.

A particular favourite is Padre (San) Pio, who has twice been seen on tree trunks and once on a church wall splodge.

These incidents have been outnumbered, however, by statues of the Madonna or Padre Pio 'weeping tears', usually of blood.
