Mario Botta to design centre of Massa di CarraraWork to begin on 13 million euro project during summer 2008 - Swiss architect Mario Botta's thumb print is all over Porto di Carrara Spa's current restructuring project. Plans are in the works for the area surrounding the Hotel Mediterraneo and the former customs house in Marina di Carrara.

The hotel will be completely demolished then reconstructed next to a series of new residences and an open-air shopping mall.

Work on the 13-million-euro project is set to begin during the summer of 2008 and finish roughly 18 months later.

According to Botta's drawings, the hotel will gain an entire floor (for a new total of four) and the adjacent building will contain 28 apartments.

The historic centre also stands to benefit from the group's plans though there are currently no further details.

Porto di Carrara is a private capital company active in the shipping and tourism sectors; it is presided over by shipping magnate Enrico Bogazzi and the general manager is Filippo Nardi. In 2006 it earned a 5 million euro profit.
