Over 60% of the wine, beer and spirits consumed in Italy is done so in bars and restaurants and not at home, according to a new report.
The report was released Monday by the Consortium of Food Distributors (CDA) which explained that 24.9% of spirits, 23.7% of beer and 13.5% of wine were consumed in bars and restaurants. While 21.3% of soft drinks and 16% of mineral water consumed in Italy were drunk outside the home and 16% of mineral water.
Every year Italians consume some 19 billion liters of beverages outside the home, some 328 liters per capita, of which 1.2% contains alcohol.
Despite this low percentage, the CDA observed, "beer, wine and spirits together represent 63.8% of the turnover for the whole beverage sector, over 2.7 billion euros out of a total of around 4.3 billion euros".
The report also found that on a daily basis over 33.5% of alcoholic beverages are consumed after dinner, 33.1% during meals, 12% as a pre-meal aperitif and 14.2% at various times during the day, including mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
