Motorbike sales rose 1.8% last month, over July of last year, thanks to strong sales for big motorcycles and scooters, sector sources said.

"Sales for the first seven months of the year were higher for the whole motorbike sector and were up 3.4% over the same period last year even without the major contract to supply the postal service," observed Guidalberto Guidi, chairman of association of motorbike makers Ancma.

The increase, he explained, "was above all thanks to a 9.3% jump in scooter sales, which offset the 5.5% decline in motorcycle sales".

The best selling motorbikes and scooters were those designed for urban use.

Scooters with engines of 300cc to 500cc saw the greatest increase in sales, up 29%, followed by scooters with 125cc engines, preferred by young people and women, which rOse 14.1%% over July of last year.

Motorcycles with engines over 1000cc saw sales leap 26.7% last month, at the expense of sales for smaller bikes.
