Pope Benedict XVI on Monday appointed Msgr. Giuseppe Betori to be the new archbishop of Florence, the Vatican press office announced.
Msgr. Betori, 61, had been secretary general of the Italian Bishops Conference (CEI) since 2001 and replaces Cardinal Ennio Antonelli, who was recently named chairman of the Pontifical Conference for the Family.
No successor to Msgr. Betori at the CEI has yet been announced.
Msgr. Betori was ordained as a priest in September 1970 and became a bishop in May 2001, a month after the late pope John Paul II appointed him as CEI secretary general.
