Free haircuts and shaves are now a thing of the past in Italy's military barracks due to the end of the obligatory military service and the establishment of a better-paid all-volunteer force.
The free barber service was officially eliminated for officers and enlisted personnel at the start of the new year along with free laundry service.
Cadets at Italy's military academies as well will find themselves paying for barber service along with tuition, accident insurance, books and all personal needs.
Sources at the defense ministry pointed out that free haircuts at sea, even when on a foreign mission, had already been eliminated.
The sources added that although it is now obligatory to pay for barber services, the prices charged are still far below the market rates.
