United States president-elect Barack Obama won the election on a platform of ''change'' which may now be extended to the United Nations, according to Italy's ambassador to the UN, Giulio Terzi.

In an interview published in the Italian language daily America Oggi, Terzi said he was convinced the new Democratic administration would shift American foreign policy more towards a ''modern multilateralism based on deeply democratic principles''.

''When I see the sign 'change' behind president-elect Obama, I see an infinity of prospects for the efficient global governance which (Italian Foreign Minister Franco) Frattini called for in his address to the UN General Assembly last September 26''.

''While the idea of totally revamping the UN may be unrealistic, I am convinced that current conditions make it perfectly possible to adopt important reforms and changes,'' the ambassador said.
