Oecd's Gurria and Sacconi review agenda for G8 Social Summit

Welfare Minister Maurizio Sacconi and the Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD),Angel Gurria discussed the global economic crisis during a meeting in Rome on Friday.

Sacconi and Gurria also reviewed the agenda of the Group of Eight (G8) nations Social Summit which Italy - in its role as G8 president in 2009 - will host in Rome from March 29 to 31.

The measures governments are adopting to support economic growth and employment will be the key issues at the meeting which is expected to include the Group of Five (G5) - China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa .

The OECD is preparing an analysis on the social effects of the crisis for the March meeting, Gurria said.

The G8 comprises Italy, Japan, the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Canada and Russia.

Italy took over the G8 presidency from Japan in January and the group's main summit will be held on the island of La Maddalena off northern Sardinia on July 8-10.
