A woman died and 26 people were injured in a head-on collision between a tram and a bus in Milan city centre on Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened in Corso di Porta Vittoria, a long traffic artery near the city's Palace of Justice, where a number 60 bus smashed into a number 12 tram.
The 52-year-old Italian woman who died was a passenger on the bus.
Three people are in a critical condition in hospital including the drivers of the bus and the tram, who both suffered broken legs and chest injuries. A woman whose leg had to be amputated following the crash is also in a serious condition.
Witnesses said the accident happened when a Porsche Cayenne SUV with a Swiss number plate moved into the section of road reserved for public transport and caused the bus to swerve into the tram, which was travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the car said he was forced into the public transport lane to avoid two pedestrians crossing in front of him.
Police are examining footage of the accident captured by a nearby closed circuit television camera.
