Only one of four Italians is happy at work and those who are gratified by their intellectually stimulating professions are too stressed, according to a report released Wednesday by national statistics bureau Istat.

The most pleased on the job are airline pilots and naval officers followed by composers, musicians, singers, magistrates and university professors.

The long list of those unhappiest with their lot is headed by blue-collar workers, clerks, cleaners, call centre switchboard operators, fast food and catering staff.

Stress at work is caused by deadlines, competitiveness, and concern over possible mistakes, the report said.
