The new Fiat 500 is creating a lot of excitement and dealers have already received over 25,000 requests for the new city car, Fiat Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo said on Tuesday.

According to Montezemolo, the 500 "is an exceptional car and an example of Fiat's DNA".

The 500, a re-edition of the classic car which was produced from 1957 to 1977, will make its official debut in Turin on July 4.

The car has a retro-look to recall the classic 500, named after its original engine size, following the example of the new Volkswagen 'Beetle' and the BMW 'Mini'.

Fiat said that when it recently put the new 500 up for sale online it sold out a month's production in just two days.

Fiat developed the platform for the 500 with Ford Motor Company of the United States, which will use it for its revamped 'Ka' model.

Although Fiat has yet to indicate what the car's list price will be, the Quattroruote car magazine said in its July edition that the city car will have a base price starting at 12,000 euros.

The priciest model, which has a 1400cc engine, will run about 14,000 euros, the publication added.

This is a far cry from the original 500 which had been Fiat's most affordable car.

Buyers will have the option of three different motors: 1200cc 4-cylinder petrol, a 1400cc Starjet 4-cylinder 16 valves petrol and a 1300cc Multijet 4-cylinder diesel.

There will also be three versions of the city car: Pop, Sport and Lounge.
