The parents of a British tourist who drowned in Venice lagoon last month thanked police investigators during a brief memorial ceremony here on Monday.
The British consul in Venice, Ivor Coward, and Anglican vicar John Henry Bowden joined relatives of Richard Raynor for the ceremony at Ponte della Liberta, where the 23-year-old's body was found four days after he disappeared during a Valentine's Day break with his girlfriend.
Relatives left a bunch of flowers, a photo and a Sheffield football scarf at the bridge in memory of Raynor, who was from Retford in Nottinghamshire.
Police think that Raynor, 23, fell into the water on the evening of February 13 while walking along a parapet on Ponte della Liberta to avoid traffic as he made his way back to his hotel in Mestre on the mainland.
Raynor's cell phone, keys and wallet were found under a guardrail on the bridge, and investigators said they may have fallen from the man's pockets as he fell from the parapet.
Earlier that evening he had been to dinner and visited bars with girlfriend Katie Robinson, 22, in Campo Santa Margherita.
The pair walked to Piazzale Roma, where they separated following an argument over whether they should get a taxi back to their hotel.
Robinson took a cab back to the hotel alone and later received a text message from Raynor saying he was lost.
His body was discovered covered in mud in water under Ponte della Liberta on February 17.
An autopsy showed he had high levels of alcohol in his blood.
