Parliament work limited to approving decrees

During the current government crisis, both the House and Senate have decided to limit their floor activities to the approval of decrees which are set to expire.

Among the decrees before the House which must be converted into law is one abrogating the so-called 'Fuda clause' in the budget.

The measure was mysteriously slipped into the budget and caused an uproar because it cut the time magistrates have to investigate accounting crimes committed by public officials against the State, making it more likely for the crime to be extinguished under the statute of limitations.

The measure was drawn up by Calabrian Senator Pietro Fuda, who is now in the centre left but was formerly a member of opposition chief Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party.

The Senate must convert a decree integrating European Union into Italian law and the one introducing tough new measures against violence at soccer stadiums.
