Serie A strugglers Parma have sacked Domenico Di Carlo after Sunday's 2-1 home defeat against Sampdoria which left the club in the drop zone.
Ex-Mantova boss Di Carlo, 43, was the youngest coach in Serie A aside from Inter manager Roberto Mancini, six months his junior.
Parma are tipped to re-appoint Nevio Scala, who led the club for six seasons in the mid-1990s, winning a Cup Winners Cup in 1992, a UEFA Cup in 1995 and a European SuperCup in 1997.
Scala, 60, is currently unemployed after two years with Spartak Moscow.
After leaving Parma, Scala had spells with Borussia Dortmund, Besiktas and Shakhtar Donetsk.
He won the Intercontinental Cup (now Club World Cup) with Borussia in 1997.
Other coaches who have been linked to the Parma job are former Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni, former Roma coach Zdenek Zeman, ex-Italy Under 21 boss Claudio Gentile and ex-Torino coach Gianni De Biasi.
But Parma's youth team coach, Andrea Manzo, may take over in the caretaker capacity until the end of the season.
The club said it would name the new manager on Monday evening or Tuesday morning.
Parma are 17th in Serie A, a point away from safety with eleven games to go.
Di Carlo is the ninth Serie A coach to be axed since the start of the season.
The most recent was Reggina boss Renzo Ulivieri, fired a week ago after a goalless draw with Palermo left the Calabrians stuck in second-last position, three points away from safety.
Ulivieri, 67, a former coach of Sampdoria, Napoli, Parma and Torino, joined Reggina from Bologna at the start of the season.
He was replaced by Nevio Orlandi, coach of Reggina's reserve team until last year.
The other seven managers shown the door this year were Fernando Orsi at Livorno; Massimo Ficcadenti at Reggina; Andrea Mandorlini at Siena; Marco Giampaolo at Cagliari, Luigi Cagni at Empoli; Stefano Colantuono at Palermo; and Nedo Sonetti at Cagliari.
