A frieze from the Parthenon has left a Palermo musem for a show in the new Acropolis museum in Athens.

The frieze, showing a foot and parts of a dress believed to belong to the Greek goddess of seduction Peitho, was bought by Palermo's Museo Archeologico Salinas from the widow of an English collector, the museum's deputy director Agata Villa said Monday.

''It's one of the most important pieces in our collection,'' she said.

The frieze was originally on the left side of the Parthenon.

It has been loaned to Greece until the end of the year.

The Greek Culture Ministry asked for the frieze to be included in the show in the Acropolis Museum which will be inaugurated Tuesday in the presence of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano.
