Italian scooter manufacturer Piaggio will launch its two wheel Vespa motor scooter on the Indian market, Piaggio chairman Roberto Colaninno announced at a press conference in Mumbai.
The Vespa scooters will be assembled at Piaggio's plant in the western Indian town of Baramati.
The Italian company is also planning to launch on the Indian market its three and four wheel models by the end of 2009. These will be hybrid vehicles.
The Italian manufacturer has also signed agreements with Japanese car maker Daihatsu and Indian construction equipment and engine maker Greaves Cotton for the production of three and four wheel commercial vehicles.
The agreements are part of Piaggio's plan to boost its shares of the Indian, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese markets.
Piaggio is based in the Tuscan town of Pontedera.
