Pole-vaulter Gibilisco cleared but Coni will appeal

Former pole vault world champion Giuseppe Gibilisco on Wednesday had a two-year doping ban overturned on appeal, clearing the way for him to compete in next year's Beijing Olympics.

The Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) said it would issue a statement "within a week" explaining why it had cleared the 28-year-old athlete.

The ban was imposed by FIDAL's disciplinary board on July 18 after the four-year 'Oil for Drugs' probe. Pending his appeal, Gibilisco was forced out of last month's world championships in Osaka, Japan.

FIDAL applied the full term recommended two weeks earlier by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) - despite his never actually failing a drugs test.

After Wednesday's appeal verdict, CONI's anti-doping prosecutors said they would appeal to CONI's Court of Last Instance and, if that failed, to world sports' ultimate disciplinary tribunal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

In its original ruling, FIDAL rejected Gibilisco's argument that he had always trained at the federation's facilities, taken dozens of tests, and never dodged a random anti-doping visit.

Gibilisco won gold in the pole vault at the 2003 world championships with a personal best of 5.90m and took bronze a year later at the Athens Olympics.

The accusations against the athlete were the result of a wider probe into the activities of Italian sports doctor Carlo Santuccione.

The case against Gibilisco was built mainly on phone wiretaps.

But CONI's anti-doping prosecutor Franco Cosenza said a diary taken from Gibilisco allegedly contained codes for doping substances.

Gibilisco is among a growing list of Italian athletes suspended for doping without testing positive.

Cyclists Ivan Basso got two years and Michele Scarponi 18 months for their alleged involvement in the Spanish blood-doping scandal "Operation Puerto".

Giro d'Italia winner Danilo Di Luca was cleared in the Oil for Drugs case.

A ban for over-using an asthma inhaler prevented sprint king Alessandro Petacchi from taking part in this year's Tour de France.

He was subsequently cleared but prosecutors are appealing.
