Pope Benedict XVI will attend a meeting of Rome's city council in March, the Vatican announced Monday.

The pope will attend a meeting on March 9 devoted to ''the universal value of Rome, capital of Catholicism and its values,'' the Vatican said.

As well as being head of the Catholic Church, the pope is also bishop of Rome.

Since his election in 2005 he has repeatedly appealed against the ''decay'' of the city.
