Pope Benedict XVI will visit Italian President Giorgio Napolitano at the presidential palace in Rome on October 4, sources at the Quirinale place said Friday.
The pontiff is repaying the president for a visit to the Vatican in November 2006, when Napolitano became the first Italian head of state with a Communist background to be received by a pope.
Since his election in May 2006 the pope has urged Napolitano to promote Christian values.
