Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli on Friday denied press reports that his French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey will be swapped for AC Milan and Italy striker Alberto Gilardino at the end of the season.
But Prandelli indicated that the Florence club had made a formal approach for Gilardino, who is now one of five first-choice strikers at Milan.
''I read the papers like everyone else so I know about the rumours, but Milan's answer has always been no,'' Prandelli told reporters.
Speculation that Gilardino might be heading elsewhere was heightened by a spectacular display from Ronaldo, Kaka' and 18-year-old newcomer Pato in Milan's 5-2 demolition of Napoli last week.
Milan's other striker is Italy veteran Pippo Inzaghi.
