Italy coach Nick Mallett on Thursday called up Rovigo lock Tommaso Reato to replace banned Stade Francais flanker Mauro Bergamasco in the squad to face France in the Six Nations on March 9.
Reato, who has some experience outside the second row, is to start training to take on Bergamasco's open-side flanker role.
The 28-year-old Bergamasco, one of Italy's most experienced players, will miss the rest of the Six Nations Championship after being handed a 13-week ban for poking Wales full-back Lee Byrne in the eye during Italy's 47-8 defeat in Cardiff on Saturday.
On Thursday Mallett also called up Ulster lock Carlo Antonio Del Fava, expanding the squad from 22 to 24.
Originally, the only change from the line-up that lost so heavily in Wales was the first call-up for Jacobus Erasmus of Montepaschi Viadana.
The record-equalling thrashing by the unbeaten Welsh was a wake-up call for the Azzurri who had finished strongly in their first two games, losing 16-11 to Ireland at Croke Park and 23-19 to England in Rome.
After Paris, where the odds are stacked heavily against an Italian win, Italy wind up their campaign in what is already being billed as a wooden-spoon play-off against Scotland in Rome on March 15.
Here is the new 24-man squad for the match at Stade de France on Sunday March 9 (15:00 GMT):
Forwards (13): Marco Bortolami (Gloucester), Martin Castrogiovanni (Leicester), Carlo Antonio Del Fava (Ulster), Jacobus Erasmus (Viadana, first call-up), Leonardo Ghiraldini (Calvisano), Andrea Lo Cicero (Racing-Metro), Carlos Nieto (Gloucester), Fabio Ongaro (Saracens), Sergio Parisse (Stade Français, capitano), Salvatore Perugini (Toulouse), Tommaso Reato (Rovigo), Josh Sole (Viadana), Alessandro Zanni (Calvisano).
