Roma gets Man Utd again

AS Roma have again drawn Manchester United in the European Champions League quarter-finals.

The English club beat them 8-3 on aggregate, including a 7-1 defeat at Old Trafford, at the same stage last year.

The thrashing was Roma's worst ever defeat in European competition.

''We're a different side now,'' Roma goalie Doni told Sky in the first comment on the draw.

''Manchester has more of a team game but (Wayne) Rooney is still one of their most dangerous players,'' he added. Rooney scored twice in last year's quarter-final - once in Rome and once in Manchester.

''We're all fired up by a desire for revenge,'' said Roma defender Marco Cassetti.

''We learned a lot from last year's experience,'' he said.

Roma General Manager Daniele Prade' said many representatives of other clubs ''heaved a sigh of relief'' when Manchester came out of the pot to face Roma.

''In my opinion Manchester are the strongest,'' he said.

But he added: ''Our lads have grown a lot since the Old Trafford defeat''.

''The important thing is that we know them well - even though we wouldn't have chosen them''.

Prade' voiced confidence there would be no repetition of the crowd trouble and alleged police brutality that marred last year's fixture in Rome. Manchester United General Secretary Ken Ramsden said: ''Rome again! It'd be too good to repeat last year's result but we have a good record against Roma and I see no reason why we should be scared''.

Roma plays the home leg on April 1 and travels to Old Trafford for the return on April 9.

Roma are Italy's remaining representative this year after Arsenal knocked out seven-time competition winner and holders AC Milan and two-time winner Inter Milan was eliminated by Liverpool.

After last season's disaster at Old Trafford Roma have been buoyed by solid performances against Man United earlier in the competition - and more especially by double wins against nine-time and record title winner Real Madrid in the last 16. In this season's group stage Man U beat Roma 1-0 at home in October and drew 1-1 away in December.

The Red Devils came top in their group with 16 points. Roma was second with 11.

If Roma beats United it will meet the winner of Schalke 04-Barcelona in the semi-final next month.

The German side is considered one of the weakest teams left in the tournament. Barcelona is one of the favourites.

Arsenal-Liverpool and Fenerbahce-Chelsea were the other match-ups that came out of the hat in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday.

The winners will play each other - raising the possibility of a Liverpool-Chelsea semi-final like last year when the Reds won on penalties before losing 2-1 to Milan in the final.

Liverpool beat Milan on penalties in the 2005 final. Arsenal lost 2-1 to Barcelona in 2006.

The first legs of this year's quarter finals will be played on April 1 and 2 and the second legs on April 8 and 9. The semi-finals are scheduled for April 22-23 and April 29-30.
