Single Italian men spend an average 1,200 euros a year in wooing women, according to a poll released on Tuesday.

The survey of 1,000 single men aged between 25 and 40 found that unattached males in Milan spent the most on romantic conquests - at least 2,400 euros a year.

Behind the Milanese came Neapolitans, who spent an average 2,000 euros a year.

Those living in the capital were among the most tight-fisted, forking out 500 euros, while lone men in Bologna were the least willing to invest in their love lives, spending only 380 euros on women.

The survey found that males splashed out on first dates in particular, when 30% were prepared to spend as much as 500 euros on their partner.

More than 80% of men polled said they never allowed their dates to pay for dinner.

There an estimated 6 million single men in Italy.
