Serie A bench-hopping begins

The Serie A bench-hopping season officially kicked off on Friday, when former Reggina boss Walter Mazzarri was appointed Sampdoria coach.

The move promises to be the first of a flurry of coach trades over the next few weeks.

Most of Italy's top-flight clubs are looking for new coaches.

They need to find them quickly so the new bosses can then shape their dealings on the player-transfer market.

Mazzarri won plaudits for guiding minnows Reggina to Serie A survival last season despite an 11-point penalty for the club's role in the Calciopoli referee-rigging scandal.

"Mazzarri is the right coach for us," said Sampdoria Managing Director Beppe Marotta.

"He will give continuity to our project by creating a competitive team while respecting budget restraints and salary ceilings at the same time".

He replaces Walter Novellino, who had been in charge of the Genoa-based club since the 2002-03 season, when he led them out of Serie B.

Novellino looks certain to take over at Torino, who sacked Gianni De Blasi on Friday.

After failing to persuade Italy's World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi to return to them, newly promoted Juventus have reportedly set their sights on former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri.

Ranieri has just pulled off a minor miracle at Parma. He took over in February, lifted them off the bottom of the table and steered them to safety.

Didier Deschamps quit as Juventus boss last Saturday after clinching the Serie B title.

The Turin giants face competition from English Premiership outfit Manchester City for Ranieri's services.

Last week's Champions League triumph has convinced AC Milan to extend Carlo Ancelotti contract until 2010.

The other top clubs are also sticking with their present coaches - Inter Milan, Roberto Mancini; AS Roma, Luciano Spalletti; Lazio, Delio Rossi; and Fiorentina Cesare Prandelli.

Palermo Chairman Maurizio Zamparini says he has reached an agreement with former Atalanta coach Stefano Colantuono. The official presentation should take place Monday, according to Zamparini.

Last season Bergamo-based Atalanta finished eighth in Serie A under Colantuono, who will replace Francesco Guidolin.

Udinese have decided to dump Alberto Malesani. Pasquale Marino, who was on the Catania bench last season, is favourite to take his place.

Cagliari have announced Marco Giampaolo will stay at the helm of the Sardinian side next season.
