Sicily celebrated at Harrods

Ceramics, jewellery, corrals and iron handicrafts will take prime place in two of Harrods main windows on Brompton Road for the whole of April. The promotion aims to highlight Sicilian handicrafts as well as the beauty of the Sicilian landscape.

This is not the first time that an event of this sort takes place in the UK but it is certainly the first time that it obtains window shop visibility of such importance. In all 19 Sicilian companies will be showcasing their products, not just through the shop windows on Brompton Road but also close to the “Egyptian” staircases, which get more than 20 thousands visitors a day and are the reasons that many visit Harrods.

The products will be accompanied by films clips from Sicily and specially commissioned photos that attempt to give an idea of the place of origin of the artifacts themselves.

This month long exposure begins with an inaugural meeting in the Modern Art Museum of London with VIP guests, reporters, and representatives of London’s Italian community.

“In the age of globalization, and as a result of the mass production of objects, we need to re-affirm that what Sicily produces is not easily copied or produced anywhere else in the world”, sail Carmelo Lo Monte – Sicily’s local government representative for handicrafts. “The skills of Sicilian artisans cannot be imitated. They are and can be considered as works of arts, products that can only be considered as luxury items”.
