Sicily to promote wines in AsiaThe Sicilian Institute of Vines and Wine will promote its wines in Japan, China and Shanghai during the Asian stage of Vinitaly Tour initiative.

The institute will offer the products of Sicily winemakers in Tokyo on November 27, 2007 and in China and Shanghai on November 29, 2007.

The wine exports of Sicily to Japan totalled 13,545 hectolitres in 2006 worth 4.65 mln euro ($6.8 mln).

Italy's wine exports to China soared 104% on the year in 2006.

The annual wine consumption in China amounts to some 5.0 million hectolitres, of which 90% are produced on the domestic market.

Italy takes fourth place among the countries importing wine to China.

According to Italian farmers' association CIA, wine production in Sicily will decrease by 50% year-on-year in terms of quantity in 2007.
