Soccer: Maradona son to play in 4th divisionDiego Maradona's son is set to join a southern Italian club that plays in the fourth division (Serie D).

Diego Jr, 22, has agreed terms with Venafro Calcio in the Molise region, sources close to the club said Friday.

The young player has had his ups and downs since doing his soccer schooling with Napoli, the team that Maradona Sr played for from 1984 to 1991.

Thanks largely to his great name, he had been the focus of high hopes and was reportedly on the verge of a call-up to Italy's Under-17 team.

But he slid down the pole at Napoli, largely because of a lack of pace, and was let go in 2002.

In 2004 he made a promising move to Genoa but was swiftly passed on to third-division Cervia before ending up at a junior league club that appeared on a reality TV show in 2005.

The following year he signed a deal with Napoli's semi-professional side Internapoli to play in Italy's sixth division.

Diego Jr is 1.66 metres tall and 66 kg, with curly black hair and a physique that reminds many of the father.

He is the product of a fling with Neapolitan woman Cristiana Sinagra during Maradona's triumphant years at Napoli.

The star fought a string of paternity suits to avoid recognising the kid but was eventually foiled by DNA evidence in 1993.

Last month he settled a long-running legal wrangle over failure to make maintenance payments.
