'Special night' agst Reds

It will take a ''special night'' of European soccer to get Inter Milan past Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday, according to coach Roberto Mancini.

Mancini told reporters that Inter will have to be ''strong and smart'' to overturn a 2-0 deficit incurred in the Champions League last 16 first leg against the Reds at Anfield.

''It's going to take something special - a night where everything goes right,'' said Mancini amid the euphoria of Inter's 100th birthday party and the celebrations at keeping Roma six points at bay in the scudetto race.

''We will have to keep our heads, without pressing forward and losing our shape. Otherwise we risk giving them the chance to unleash counterattacks, their best weapon''.

Mancini is expected to have Romanian defender Christian Chivu back in a defence which will struggle to make up for the loss of Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba, out injured for the rest of the season, and the banned Marco Materazzi.

Liverpool go into the game buoyed by a 3-0 Premiership win over Newcastle in which Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard ran rampant.

Inter, on the other hand, looked ragged and blunted in an unconvincing win against Reggina that at least preserved their six-point Serie A lead over Roma.

On a high after beating Real Madrid in Madrid, Roma scored twice to roll over Napoli - giant-killers against Inter a week before - and stay within striking distance of champions and leaders Inter.

Third-placed Juventus, seven points behind Roma, got back to winning ways at Genoa to pull four points clear of Fiorentina, surprise 1-0 losers at Siena.

AC Milan, desperate to claim the fourth Champions League berth after being dumped out of this season's championship by Arsenal, scored two late goals at Empoli to close to within a point of Fiorentina.

Next week Roma host Milan while Inter entertain 8th-placed Palermo.
