Strugglers seek serie A salvation

The desperate fight to fend off the drop to Serie B resumes Sunday afternoon, as eight teams seek to distance themselves from the last relegation spot.

Just three points separate the threatened teams with two games to go - bottom pair Ascoli and Messina are already demoted.

The current occupants of the final relegation berth, Reggina (18th, 36 points) face a tough visit to Empoli (6th, 53), who will be sure to qualify for next season's UEFA Cup if they win.

Reggina have done well to still be in with a chance of survival after recieving an 11-point handicap for the club's role in the Calciopoli referee-rigging scandal.

They will be buoyed by the memory of the 4-1 thrashing they dealt Empoli earlier in the season.

Chievo Verona (17th, 36) - who are only ahead of Reggina thanks to a better showing in the encounters between the sides - entertain Ascoli (20th, 24).

The basement club are dangerous, despite having nothing to play for, as Palermo found out last week, when they lost to them 3-2.

Cagliari (16th, 37), who have picked up just three points from their last five games, welcome a Roma side sure to finish second and qualify for the group stage of the Champions League.

Siena (15th, 37) are looking to beat troubled Palermo in Sicily, after ending a three-match losing streak against Empoli last week.

On Monday Palermo recalled coach Francesco Guidolin three games after sacking him.

Palermo (7th, 52) looked potential title contenders before Christmas, but have won just one of their last 14 games and risk falling out of the UEFA Cup-qualification zone.

The Parma side (14th, 35) of former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri pay a visit to Lazio (4th, 61), who should be in a relaxed frame of mind. Lazio are certain to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

The only direct clash between relegation-battle rivals is in Turin, where Torino (12th, 39) host Livorno (11th, 39).

Both teams go into the game on the back of victories. Livorno beat Sampdoria 1-0 last time out, while Torino came back from the capital with three points after stunning AS Roma by the same margin.

Catania (13th, 38), the last of the eight threatened teams, take on Sampdoria (9th, 46) in Genoa.

AC Milan's home match against Udinese (10th, 43) will be played on Saturday evening to give the Rossoneri an extra day rest ahead of Wednesday's Champions League final against Liverpool in Athens.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti will field a second-string side because Milan (3rd, 61) are sure to finish with a Champions League slot and can afford to lose.

Champions Inter (1st, 93) can break the all-time Serie A points record of 94 by beating Atalanta on Sunday. This record belongs to the great Torino side of 1947-48 (if their tally is calculated with the present system of three points for a win).

Atalanta (8th, 49) are seeking to keep up the pressure on Palermo for Italy's final UEFA Cup place.

The Bergamo-based outfit have won their last two games, thanks in part to the form of former Italy striker Christian Vieri. Vieri scored in each of those wins after returning from a long spell out with injury.

Fiorentina (5th, 54) need a draw or better at Messina (19th, 25) to book a place in next season's UEFA Cup in the top flight's last fixture of the weekend.

In Serie B, Juventus will win promotion with three games to spare on Saturday if they win at Arezzo and third-placed Napoli fail to beat Modena at home.

A draw will be enough for Juve, if Napoli lose.
