Summer will be turmoil - free

Italian League President Antonio Matarrese promised on Thursday that the 2007 closed season will be free of the financial chaos that has dogged Serie A in recent years.

Fiorentina were demoted to the lower tiers after going bankrupt in 2002, while Napoli suffered the same fate the year after. Both clubs have since battled their way back to the top flight.

AS Roma also ran into trouble in 2003 when the financial documents they presented to register for the championship turned out to be false.

In the summer of 2005 cross-town rivals Lazio managed to avoid bankruptcy and register for Serie A thanks to a controversial agreement with the Italian inland revenue office. This enabled the Roman club to pay back outstanding taxes of 140 million euros over a 23-year period.

Last month Covisoc, the Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC) body that monitors clubs' finances, said Inter Milan should not have been allowed to register for the 2005-2006 championship because of alleged financial irregularities.

But this year will be different, according to Matarrese.

"There are no particular concerns for the 42 Serie A and B clubs that should take part in the upcoming soccer championship," Matarrese said.

"If Covisoc confirms this, as I believe it will, we will set next season's fixtures on July 19". On Thursday FIGC Chief Giancarlo Abete called on Matarrese and Italy coach Roberto Donadoni to avoid repetitions of a recent spat over fixture schedules.

On Monday Matarrese said Donadoni should "talk less" when he complained that the August 26 start to the Serie A season gave his players little time to gain match fitness for Italy's Euro 2008 qualifiers against France and Ukraine in September.

"Fortunately the row between national team coach Roberto Donadoni and League President Antonio Matarrese seems to be over," said Abete.

"The best advice to give from now on is - no more polemics, it's better if everyone shuts up".

Some Italian sports pundits have criticized Abete for failing to take Donadoni's side.
