Tardelli quits Juventus board

Former Azzurri star Marco Tardelli quit Juventus' board of directors on Thursday, complaining he was not being consulted over decisions.

When asked if the move was due to friction with other board members, the 1982 World Cup-winner replied: "I might have had differences of opinion, if they had asked me".

"From today I am no longer a member of this club in any role," added Tardelli, an ex Juve player.

The 52-year-old joined the Juve board last June, following the resignation of the former management because of the Calciopoli referee-rigging scandal.

This saw the Turin giants relegated to the second division for the first time in their history and stripped of the 2005 and 2006 Serie A titles.

Pundits suggested Tardelli's presence on the board was designed to help restore credibility.

Tardelli, who scored one of soccer's most memorable goals in Italy's 3-1 1982 World Cup Final win over West Germany, is highly respected by the Italian sporting public.

He is also popular with fans, after commanding the Juventus midfield for 10 years between 1975 and 1985, when the Turin giants won five league titles, a UEFA Cup and a European Cup.

Tardelli was part of the Juventus board's 'sporting committee'.

But he said the only real contribution he had made was to suggest Claudio Ranieri be included on a list of possible coaches when the club was looking for a replacement for Didier Deschamps.

Ranieri was given the job last week.

Tardelli said he will formally present his resignation at a board meeting on June 26.

"If Tardelli formalized this intention, I'd be sorry because the board and the club have always appreciated his contribution," said Juventus Chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli in a statement published on the club website.

"In any case, I believe the question should be addressed at the appropriate venue, which is the next board meeting".

Tardelli went into coaching after hanging up his boots.

He led Italy's under-21 side to the 1999 European Championship and then had unsuccessful spells at Inter, Bari, the Egyptian national team and Arezzo.
