Italian authorities plan to bump up the number of checks carried out on tax payers by 12.5% to 394,000 in 2008, the Treasury said on Tuesday.
The increased number of checks is part of the government's three-year plan to raise annual tax checks to 500,000 by 2010, it said in a statement.
The government's crackdown on tax evasion, a key plank in its economic policy, produced an extra six billion euros for state coffers in 2007, figures released last month showed.
The 2008 budget provides for the hiring of nearly 5,000 additional tax office staff over the next three years, so as to recover for the state some 20 billion euros in dodged taxes by 2011.
