Turk who shot Pope wants Polish citizenship

The Turk who almost killed Polish pope John Paul II in 1981 has asked to become a citizen of Poland.

One-time hitman Ali Agca said from his Turkish prison cell he felt John Paul, who died three years ago, was his ''spiritual brother''.

Agca's lawyer said his client had written to Polish President Lech Kaczynski about his plea after receiving discouraging signs from officialdom.

Earlier this month, when Agca's wishes first became known, the Polish foreign ministry pointed out that would-be citizens are required to have lived in Poland for five years.
