1,500 hectare site in San Miniato (RM) - Work on an environmental project that will see the construction of a Truffle Nature Park in the hills of San Miniato (near Pisa) will begin in Spring 2008. The initiative permits the sanctioning of 1500 hectares dedicated to truffle production.
Almost 20 quintals of white truffles are harvested here each year for a total value of five million Euro. The park is sponsored by the Consorzio di Bonifica Valdera, an entity dedicated to the maintenance of the rivers and small streams in the area which constitute the water line in which the truffles grow and where experts know to look for truffles, near oaks, pines and poplars.
Each plant will be classified and recorded by a professional custodian. In addition, the park will focus on truffle related tourism, including trekking and mountain bike trails.
