Tuscany to pick 2007 grapes early

Tuscan vineyards are looking at harvest dates almost one month earlier than normal this year.

Industry insiders ISMEA and the Italian Union of Wines have predicted the 2007 harvest may come 10-20 days early according to the state of the vines during the first ten days of July.

The grapes are maturing nicely thanks to May/June rains - disease levels are also very low and the grapes seem to be good quality.

Though it is still too early to verify the heat's effect on all varieties, there does not seem to be problems in store for Sangiovese.

In general, Tuscany mirrors the quality and balance forecasted for the north-central Italian regions.
