Since the Middle Ages Tuscany has always been a stop for all tourists walking Via Francigena headed to the most popular Italian destinations such as Rome, Naples and Pompeii. From an ancient pilgrim's step Tuscany soon became an attraction in its own right.

On their quest for art and history, travellers of the Grand Tour put cities like Florence, Siena and Pisa well and truly on the world map, since when, if anything, the area has become even more popular.
