US businesses study Tuscan biotech industryPossible future investments in Life Sciences sector - A pool of eight American businesses and a US polytechnic institute will visit various 'life science' (pharmaceutical and biotech) firms in Tuscany.

The American companies scheduled to make the trip are: AmeriSci Boston, Bioventure Investors, Burrill & Company, Genentech Inc, Nestle', OsteoCorp Inc, Perquot Capital Management, XDx and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

The delegation will visit the Magnetic Resonance Centre in Florence, the Toscana Life Sciences Park in Siena and numerous other businesses in the area.

The meetings were organized by Toscana Promozione and by the National Institute for Foreign Trade in collaboration with the Regione Toscana.

Life sciences are a very important sector in Tuscany.

The pharmaceutical industry employs more than 7,200 people and generates more than 420 million euro in surplus value and 736 million euros in exports, which represents 6.3% of all Italian exports in the sector.

These numbers make Tuscany the third region in Italy with respect to number of businesses. The biotech field employs 2,900 people (12% of the national total) and there are 23 companies in the region that make up a total of one billion euro in sales (12.5% of national total), which puts Tuscany in the third place in Italy.
