The United States on Friday lauded Italy's decision to ease rules on the use of its troops in Afghanistan.
US Defence Secretary Robert Gates told reporters Italy ''has taken a great step'' which the US hopes other countries will follow.
Italy has eased restrictions so that troops can be more flexibly deployed.
