Vatican wants school Bible classes

The Vatican on Tuesday called for Bible studies in Italian schools - even for students who opt out of classes on Christianity.

Msgr Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, said the Bible classes would allow students ''to know the great code of our culture and understand our identity''.

Ravasi made his suggestion after being asked what he thought of the idea, advanced by leftwing politicians, of replacing the weekly classes on Christianity with an hour of comparative studies on all the world's religions.
