Venice airport to expandVenice airport operator SAVE will invest 54 mln euro ($78.9 mln) in the next three years in expanding and improving the services at the airport in the northern Italian city.

The works will include the expansion of the land side terminal for a total 9.5 mln euro ($13.9 mln) and the construction of a new building for baggage handling and check in for a 29.5 mln euro ($43.1 mln) investment.

Runway lights will be renewed with 5.5 mln euro ($8.0 mln) while 6.5 mln euro ($9.5 mln) will be allocated for the people mover system of public transport to connect the terminal with the wet dock passing through the parking lot.

The investment follows data on passenger traffic at the Venice airport, which is currently fourth in Italy in terms of traffic with 7.1 million passengers.

SAVE, the Venice airport company, invested 210 mln euro ($307.1 mln) between 2000 and 2006, launching the development of intercontinental flights to New York in 2000, Philadelphia in 2005, Atlanta in 2006 and Dubai in 2007.

Negotiations are under way for intercontinental flights to Shanghai, Chicago and Hong Kong.
