Venice on Monday braced for its first high water of the season with high tide expected to be between 90cm to 95cm above normal.

About 3% of the lagoon city's historic center, including St Mark's Square, was expected to be flooded when the high water peaked, between noon and 12:30.

High water is expected to return again at high tide on Tuesday and may run as much as a meter above average
