Hungarian composer and musician Gyorgy Kurtag will be honoured with a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the 53rd edition of the Venice Music Biennale later this year, organisers said on Tuesday.
Presenting this year's edition at a news conference in Rome, Biennale artistic director Paolo Baratta said 73 composers will attend the event, which runs from September 25 to October 3.
The contemporary music festival will open with a performance by Japanese composer and multimedia artist Suguru Goto and an ensemble of automated robots, said Baratta.
The festival line-up, which will include 16 world premieres, will also feature the flamenco of Carmen Linares, music from the Balkans, and the American blues.
Kurtag has won numerous awards, including the French title Officier des Arts et des Lettres and was named an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001.
