Where the real wines goTuscan export trends revealed - The United States claims almost half of the DOC and DOCG red wines that Tuscany exports abroad.

According to a recent report by the the Nomisma study centre, 45% of Tuscany's exports go to American wine drinkers, while Germany receives 17.6%, followed by the UK (6.1%) and other European Union countries (10.8%).

Canada claims 4.9% of the market and Swiss wine consumers enjoy 7.8% of exports.

The Japanese market remains decidedly weak (3.1%) as the local markets still perceive Italian products as a passing fad.

Only 1.4% of exports currently go to BRIC, an acronym that groups together the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Data by National Statistics Institute ISTAT focus on demand in 2006 and confirm market trends since the year 2000.

Exports have decreased considerably in various countries: Germany (-42.4%), England (-34.4%) and Switzerland (-42%).

On the other hand, the US (+13%), BRIC (+126.3%) and non European nations (+41.4%) all saw strong increases in consumption.
