Italian police arrested a woman for murder and concealing a corpse on Tuesday after they discovered the body of a naked man in her kitchen freezer.

Police found the corpse of Giancarlo De Santis, 68, by chance when they called at a house at Doganella di Ninfa, in the countryside near Latina, as part of an investigation into a prostitution ring.

Neighbours had tipped off investigators about frequent visitors to the house, which was being rented by 35-year-old Sicilian Stefania Orsolo Scarlata.

The body found in the woman's freezer showed no outward signs of violence and police said they were waiting on autopsy results to confirm whether the man was murdered or died of natural causes. Initial examinations suggested he had been in the freezer for several days.

One theory being explored is that the Rome resident may have had a heart attack while having sex with Scarlata, who then panicked and concealed the body.

Neighbours described Scarlata as ''reclusive'' and said she ''kept herself to herself''.

Police have discovered 22 brothels and houses used by call girls and arrested 15 people in connection with prostitution in the Latina region since the start of the year.
