Zinedine Zidane's infamous headbutt on Italy's Marco Materazzi in the World Cup final has been registered as a logo that may soon appear on clothing, shoes and bottles of beer.
A Chinese businessman, Zhao Xiaokai, has registered a design of the France star thrusting his head, bull-like, into Materazzi's chest.
Zhao, who is a manager of a company that makes sporting goods, said he is thinking of putting the logo on a new range of sportswear.
He added that he is willing to sell the rights to use the logo for one million yuan, which is about 100,000 euros.
Zhao, who paid 2,000 yuan (some 200 euros) to register the logo, claims to have been contacted by two beer producers that are interested in using the brand. He said he is not worried about the players suing him for abuse of their image rights, because the design features silhouettes rather than actual pictures of them.
Zidane was sent off for headbutting Materazzi eight minutes from the end of extra time in the July 9 World Cup final, which Italy won on penalties.
FIFA banned Materazzi for two games for provoking Zidane by insulting his sister.
The decision caused outrage in Italy because the ban was only one game less than that handed out to Zidane. Sports Minister Giovanna Melandri accused FIFA of adopting a "discriminatory attitude towards Italy", while Green party MP Angelo Bonelli described it as a "headbutt to Italian sport".
Several foreign observers also expressed concern that the similarity of the punishments effectively puts abusive language on the same level as violent behaviour. Furthermore, the ban on Zidane is a symbolic once since he has retired from the game.
Materazzi was also fined 3,182 euros, while Zidane will have to pay a 4,773-euro penalty and has agreed to do three days of community service with children and youngsters. According to reports in the Italian sports press, on Wednesday night Materazzi extended his contract with Inter Milan until 2010.
