The Maltese branch of the world-famous Venice casino has been ordered to close because of its staff's exuberant celebrations of Italy's World Cup win.

The island's Game Board said it received an avalanche of customer complaints because personnel were drunk, neglecting their duties and being over-friendly with female gamblers after the victory over France on July 9.

A week before the Gaming Board suspended 13 other casino staff members for misconduct.

The management of the Maltese casino has sent out redundancy letters to the establishment's 120 workers as a result.

Venice casino, which owns 40% of the Maltese branch, said it was investigating the case to determine whether to sue for damages.
