The world's biggest and smelliest flower has bloomed in Florence's botanical gardens, a rare event since the species rarely flowers in cultivation, botanists said on Thursday.
The Amorphophallus Titanum is better known as titan arum or Corpse flower due to a foul stench which serves to attracts insects.
The plant was discovered by Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari in the rainforests of Sumatra in 1878.
It was the third time the stinky giant has flowered in Florence's gardens, with previous bloomings in 2004 and 2002.
Botanists said the titan arum flower had reached a height of 1.95 metres when it blossomed on August 14.
